The island lies opposite central Aswan, just north of the First Cataract. This island is the oldest inhabited part of Aswan and served as the cult center of the ram headed god Khnum in ancient times. It is located in the middle of the Nile River, and is also the home to Nubian villages, a handful of tourist sites, and a landmark hotel.
