You will be picked up from your hotel, nile cruise or the airport by one of Gem Explore's Egyptologists. You'll start the tour with visiting Aswan's High Dam, which is the world's largest embankment dam. It was built across the Nile in Aswan, Egypt, between 1960 and 1970. With it's ability to better control flooding, provide increased water storage for irrigation and generate hydroelectricity the dam was seen as pivotal to Egypt's planned industrialization.
Aswan was the source of ancient Egypt’s finest granite, used to make statues and embellish temples, pyramids and obelisks. The large unfinished obelisk in the Northern Quarries has provided valuable insight into how these monuments were created, although the full construction process is still not entirely clear. Three sides of the shaft, nearly 42m long, were completed except for the inscriptions. At 1168 tonnes, the completed obelisk would have been the single heaviest piece of stone the Egyptians ever fashioned.
At a late stage in the process, however, a flaw appeared, so it lies where the disappointed stonemasons abandoned it, still partly attached to the parent rock.
Later on, you will head to Egypt's ancient center for the cult of Isis, the Temples of Philae. They were venerated from the Pharaonic era through the Greek, Roman, and Byzantine periods with each ruler making their own additions to the stones there.
This sacred site has dazzled travelers since the first Nile cruises set off from Cairo and is one of Nubia's most important monument sites. When the tour ends, you will be escorted back to your hotel.
